Sleep Paralysis

Sleep paralysis is a feeling of being conscious but unable to move. It occurs when a person passes between stages of wakefulness and sleep. During these transitions, you may be unable to move or speak for a few seconds up to a few minutes. Some people may also feel pressure or a sense of choking. Sleep paralysis may accompany other sleep disorders such as narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is an overpowering need to sleep caused by a problem with the brain’s ability to regulate sleep. ~Web MD

Sleep paralysis is also known as Old Hag. A phenomenon that is known, to some extent, by all cultures throughout the world. Some people say attacking aliens are the cause of sleep paralysis, while others credit the “Devil” himself and/or his minions, and if not that, then the classic “old hag” who sits on an unsuspecting sleeping person’s chest, and upon their waking realize they are powerless to move. For what ends a hag would do this are as varied as the cultures on the planet. Only the old hag does not always appear as a grotesque elderly matron. ~paranormalsocieties.com

I was 6 years old when I 1st experienced sleep paralysis. Our apartment was adjacent to an old funeral home in the city. The only view we had out of our kitchen window was the window to the funeral embalming room. In the evening, my Mother would sit at the dinner table by the window and watch while drinking coffee. This apartment was one of the most creepiest places ever. I had many paranormal experiences in this home. But, back to sleep paralysis. My mother sent me to bed with my youngest sister. She was 4 at the time. We shared a full size bed. I suffered then and now with terrible insomnia. Finally after playing with my fingers and singing songs in my head that I fell off to sleep. Immediately I felt something jump on my chest and hold my arms and legs down. I had a toy puppet lying right in front of me on the floor and it started laughing. His laugh was taunting and demonic. It got worse and worse. I tried to scream and no words would come out, I tried to break loose but it was a losing battle. I was paralyzed. My sister laid fast asleep next to me and I could hear my parents in the living room watching TV. It was such a terrifying experience. It damaged me for years! When I finally got loose, I ran to my parents and tried to explain my experience and they just took me back to bed and my mother had that old saying “When you’re bad Satan messes with ya, and if you good you will have no problems” I just thought “I’m only six for crying out loud”

My 2nd incident took place the 1st night I came home from the hospital with my son. I was exhausted. I took a hot bath, had some fruit and hopped in the bed. I was nursing, so my son laid in my arms, the room was pitch dark and I fell off to sleep. Within seconds, I felt a heaviness like a body just flop on me, and began laughing like crazy. I thought to myself “Oh No you don’t, I have my child here” I was paralyzed. I couldn’t even swallow. In my mind I began to pray “The Lord is my shepherd…. And immediately I was released.

My 3rd incident, I was 25 and I had a slumber party with some old friends who came to visit from out of town. My 2 friends slept in a blow up bed next to my bed. After wine, pizza, and a horror movie…we all fell off to sleep. This time after falling in a deep sleep on my back, I was yanked up to my ceiling , violently turned facing my friends and I was glued to my ceiling. I tried  to scream for help but nothing would come out and I couldn’t move. Again I started to pray in my head “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want…and I was released. Now I don’t know if this was astral projection, a nightmare, or sleep paralysis but I will never forget it. It was horrible.

My 4th incident, I sent my son off to school and I got back in the bed. I fell back to sleep and I suddenly felt something run up the bed and jump on my chest. It was a dark figure and it had a black mask like thing and it placed it on my face. My face began to feel real tight and the dark figure let me go. I felt angry, fierce, I began walking on all fours. I was growling demonically and speaking a language I wasn’t familiar with. I remember coming close to my cat and it hissed and got into a fighting stance. I roamed the entire house and then got back into the bed and I just remember being woke by the doorbell. My son just got off the school bus. I’d been asleep all that time. A very good spiritual friend said to me “Either you had a really bad nightmare or something was trying to possess you”

I am not a fan of afternoon naps. Sleep paralysis seem to occur during that time for me. So I hadn’t had an attack in a very long time.

My son just recently had an incident. I had just lost my father a few months ago. My son took an afternoon nap in the house alone. He said he opened his eyes and couldn’t move or speak. What really got me is when he said, the answering machine automatically came on and said leave a message “beep” and he heard my father’s voice, He said my father was repeating himself but stuttering over and over. He could not make out what he was saying. My son said he was so terrified, he just wanted to get loose and run out of the house. He said he literally had tears. My son is having  a very hard time dealing with my father’s death and then this happens.

I really can’t say if this is a nightmare, a medical issue, or supernatural. I do know it stops when I pray, or so it seems. It’s been some years for me and I shall hope I don’t experience it again, anytime soon.
